Mozilla has announced the availability of the first Firefox 3.1 beta release, an important development milestone for the popular open source web browser. Mozilla aims to make Firefox 3.1 a strong incremental improvement with user interface enhancements, new features, and increased support for emerging web standards. The new beta release includes a modest handful of noteworthy changes that improve the user experience.

Mozilla had originally planned to start code freeze for beta 1 in the middle of August, but decided to delay the beta release and do an additional alpha release instead.

The beta includes Mozilla’s new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which uses tracing optimization to deliver a massive performance boost that makes it faster than Google Chrome’s V8 engine. Although it still falls short of Apple’s recent Squirrelfish Extreme project, the Mozilla developers say that TraceMonkey still leaves plenty of room for additional optimization.

Although TraceMonkey is finally included in beta 1, the new engine isn’t actually enabled by default. It is still under heavy development and it reportedly exhibits some bugs that could impact JavaScript reliability. To configure TraceMonkey in beta 1, browse to “about:config” and then toggle the “javascript.options.jit.content” variable.

Another major feature that is included in this release is Mozilla’s new implementation of the W3C Geolocation Specification. It allows users to supply web applications with their geographical location. For privacy reasons, the browser will automatically prompt the user before passing that information to web sites.

Earlier this month, Mozilla Labs also released the Geolocation Specification implementation as a Firefox 3.0 extension called Geode so that users and developers can start testing the functionality and incorporating support for the APIs into their web applications without having to use Firefox 3.1 prerelease versions. Several web sites already have basic support for the feature, including Yahoo’s Fire Eagle and the Pownce microblogging service. We tested it with Outside.in Radar, a new web service that displays news headlines and other information about things that are near the user’s current location.

In addition to these new features, beta 1 also includes a lot of other improvements that we have looked at in previous alpha and nightly builds.

We are on the eve of Google announcing their search results for their 3Q. Google has become a major force in discovery and advertising by virtue of their ability to surface the closest result relevant to a user across the broadest set of queries on the Internet. Dozens of start-ups and certainly a few large players have tried to de-throne Google’s supremacy, but few have been successful. The switching costs are zero, yet Google’s market share has only gone up. Narrowing the domain has helped, and by limiting topical areas to things like shopping or health, companies have created market share distributions more favorable than in broad search; however, an end user is not going to use or remember 100 different search engines optimized for 100 different topics. In fact, as it has in Health or in Local, Google has picked off verticals one by one to super-optimize. This all got me thinking about how a start-up could ever beat Google at the broad game of search.

Search is decomposed into a few different elements. The first is a “spider” – a virtual bot that scours the web, parses web pages, and builds a representation of the web; the second is an algorithm that takes those spliced pieces and decides what pages are more important than others given a set of constraints or inputs; the third is a massive index that takes all this analysis and stores it so that at “query time”, an engine can quickly take the digested knowledge and weights, and return a result.

It’s my view that algorithms are not people or resource intensive. A few guys thinking very hard can come up with simple, revolutionary ideas as Sergey Brin and Larry Page did. Sure, Google has an incredible number of variables and residual terms that help refine its algorithm, but at the end of the day, it’s very rare that math is invented or discovered. In fact, I’d wager a “better algorithm” already exists somewhere in academic labs throughout the country. If it can be written or built by few, it is within the realm of startup possibility today.

I tend to believe the biggest challenge for a start-up remains circumventing the need to re-create Google’s infrastructure against an algorithm. Google spends over $2.8bln in CAPEX a year. They spend significantly more in CAPEX than they do on search algorithm specific R&D. I have heard estimates that maintenance and improvement of Google’s algorithms can be satisfied by a few hundred engineers.

Warming up for Diablo III

Posted by PASTener | 8/31/2008 09:04:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Yes, I am a PC game freak. My friends already know this about me. I’ve gotten more people to try StarCraft, and Diablo than any other game I play. Since all the news about Diablo III being in the works, a lot of us have started playing Diablo II, Lord of Destruction (The expansion) again, as a kind of warm up for the new and improved Diablo III. There is also a new StarCraft due out, so I imagine we’ll all be playing that again soon too.

We spent most of our playtime tonight catching our characters up with each other. Hubby and I have Hell level characters with all the best of everything, so we helped J & C get their characters through normal level a little bit faster than normal. I enjoy playing online with friends over BattleNet because it adds so much to the game, don’tcha think? I love talking about these games, so feel free to comment. As a heads up, I don’t play WOW, and I don’t do ladder games. I have all of the Warcraft games, but don’t play them because I just prefer Diablo and StarCraft… and I like to pay bills, so really don’t need yet another game to distract me from working LOL.

Just in case you’re like me, and can’t stand losing the option of accessing your desktop while playing a full screen game, (I never know what time it is when I play that way), I found a video on YouTube that shows you how to open Diablo in windowed mode. I used to have it set this way before a reformat, but had since forgotten how I did it lol.

Basically, you just right click the shortcut for Diablo II LOD, choose properties, and in the “target” box, at the end of what’s already listed there, add a space, and then -w. In the video above, you’ll find this done at the 3.35 mark… the rest is for game geeks that run mods, so probably (maybe) doesn’t apply to you.

I’m so excited about the new games coming out, you have no idea! Below the cut I’ve included the trailers for the two games I’m anxiously awaiting release of… as well as a couple that show some of the changes made. Specifics on the system requirements haven’t been released yet, but you can bet I’ll be updating my puters accordingly! Yes, I’m THAT much of a game geek!

Apple next month will launch new iPod Touch and Macbook

According to media reports, analysts said Monday that Apple will be released in September by the re-design of the iPod Touch and Macbook computer.

Analysts said Apple’s choice will be released in the United States before the holiday selling season, the new release will include the iPod Touch and Macbook notebook price cuts. Piper Jaffray & Co analyst Olson predicted that the new Macbook will be even more slim, the case may be engineering plastics, instead of the current aluminum, machinery keyboard may also adopt a new look.

iPod Touch will be similar to the appearance of Apple’s new 3 G iPhone cell phone, at the same time, iPod Touch the storage capacity will be further improved, the same storage capacity will reduce the price of the product.

In July at the company earnings meeting, the company has hinted that the company will launch enhanced version of new products. Apple claimed that the company is developing the “art” of new products, then customers would be “inconceivable” in the new product prices.

Steal Youtube Video

Most people think of downloading music as an illegal act in every form. This assumption by the uneducated is very wrong in a lot of cases. One way for instance to get just about any song you want for free on your computer is YouTube. You can download all the YouTube videos your heart desires legally and for free directly from where you watch them.

No, there isn’t a “Free Download” button underneath the video player beside the “Embed” button, but that doesn’t make it illegal. Downloading and installing Real player will automatically give you the option on any flash movie to download it. Not all movies work, but all of YouTube’s videos do, and it’s a great way to keep an offline collection of all your favorite music for free.

Personally, I use this all the time, but I know people who use programs to record or extract the sound track from the videos. This is possible and actually not that hard if you know your way around recording software, but it is very illegal. I do not condone, nor do I download or record illegal copies of music.

eReader for iPhone

The launch of the iPhone in Australia a few weeks ago gave Australians a new ebook reading option. I’ve been a bit wary of people claiming that reading on a mobile is going to be big. I have a Blackberry and I just couldn’t imagine reading a book on it. I know it’s huge in Japan but a lot of things are big in Japan (like chicken cartilage and Pachinko) which never make it beyond the shores of the land of the Rising Sun. This video of the new version of eReader from Fictionwise has changed my mind however. I suspect that I will almost certainly never buy another dedicated ebook Reader.

What you drink reflects your personality.

How you take your coffee is really all that’s needed to reveal the kind of person you.

And, backing this up is a new research commissioned by Hudsons Coffee in Australia, reports the Herald Sun.

According to the study, those who love [lattes] are more likely to flick to the gossip and entertainment section of the newspaper, spend Saturday night in a nightclub, listen to dance music, take public transport rather than their own, live in a shared house with friends, at home with mum and dad, as well as have between 201-300 Facebook friends

Cappuccino drinkers, on the other hand, are more likely to flick to the sports section of the newspaper first, spend their Saturday night in front of the TV with takeaway food, listen to pop music, drive a sedan, live by the beach or water, and have more than 500 friends on Facebook

Flat white lovers, the research states, have a tendency to flick to the travel section of the newspaper, spend their Saturday night on a date, listen to rock music, get around via taxi, live in a CBD apartment, and have between one and 50 Facebook friends

Even [long] black lovers have their own particular traits. They really don’t dig papers that much, preferring the internet for their news. These coffee drinkers spend Saturday night at the cinema or theatre, listen to classical or acoustic music, drive a four-wheel drive or sportscar, live in a house in the suburbs or country, have between one and 50 Facebook friends.

Google’s Ex-Engineers are Cuil

Posted by PASTener | 8/09/2008 03:00:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

Several ex-Google engineers have developed a search engine to compete with Google. Cuil pronounced “Cool” says that it will be able to index the web faster with more results. Cuil gives results…and I’m not really that impressed yet (I searched for the school and it showed a thumbnail of some guy brushing his teeth). I don’t know what I did before Google, but it has saved me a ton of time. Competition is good and it would be good to have another reliable search engine out there. It’ll be hard to compete with Google’s apps, email and other items. Google had great timing and has become a habit for everyone including myself. (smallard)

EA Passes on Wii Version of Godfather 2

Wii owners won’t be running the family business come 2009. EA has decided to make Godfather 2 a PS3 & 360 exclusive. Bound to take wannabe mob bosses to new heights, the game revolves around the cult classic Godfather series. Hijack cars, smuggle drugs, shoot up local restaurants and the other usual gang related crimes are bound to riddle this game. Still, Wii fans will have to aim for another system if they desire to become “The Boss”.

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

Posted by PASTener | 8/08/2008 08:57:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Well, everyone knows that the Beijing Olympic Games will be starting in a couple of hours. But little did I realize, the names behind these 5 mascots actually spells out “Beijing Welcomes You” in Mandarin. Yeah, I know - I am hopeless. But it was during lunch today, that a friend of mine told me their names after I referred them as “the Beijing Olympic creatures”. Once again, I’m ashamed. Thats why, right after returning to my office, instead of resuming work - I went to read up on these poor mascots which I referred as creatures. These mascots, has a rhyming two-syllable name — a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow. When you put their names together — Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni — they say “Welcome to Beijing,”. Now I am ready for tonite’s official opening.

Tired of backing up your iPhone?

Tired of backing up your iPhone everytime you sync your music/vids? Backup Disabler works by setting a hidden iTunes preference to turn off syncing.

The balance between backing up that your latest saved game or text messages and waiting an hour for your phone to sync is a delicate one. Now, you can easily sync without waiting for the backups, and just as easily re-enable them whenever you like.

Superhero Movie

Posted by PASTener | 8/05/2008 04:17:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

*Sigh* Why do I subject myself to this stuff? I mean, I know that so far I have enjoyed one of these “parody” films, Not Another Teen Movie. Part of what made that one work is that it stuck to it’s premise. It mocked the teen movie genre and rarely strayed from it. The most recent efforts were Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans.

They were terrible. Epic Movie, first off, completely missed it’s most obvious target, Lord of the Rings. Secondly? Borat, Nacho Libre, Snakes on a Plane, X-Men, the Da Vinci Code and so on are not epic films. Meet the Spartans suffered pretty much the same trouble…Britney Spears jokes in a sword and sandals parody are not funny. I had trouble staying awake in Meet the Spartans. There was plenty to work with from Ben Hur to Troy, from Clash of the Titans to 300. But why do that when you can make Ugly Betty Jokes.

To it’s credit, the folks behind Superhero Movie tried to reign those impulses in. It tried to go back to the Airplane/Police Squad days. Even in the audio commentary, one of the writers expresses that one scene represents what they were aiming for, a central plot that simply pokes fun more at the genre, rather than specific films. And the movie does stick pretty closely to it’s target. This automatically elevates it over Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie. It uses the plot of Spider-Man, and I will say, I generally got some laughs, though they were pretty few. Brent Spiner screaming like a eight year old girl? Had me laughing. The Facebook joke that followed it? Not so much. The nail gun scene? Pretty funny. Oddly, what makes it funny is it is not aping a sequence from another Super-Hero movie. The X-Mansion sequence brings the film to a dead halt.

It relies heavily on the plot of Spider-Man, but then has appearances by the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Batman, Superman and so on. When the film resembles Scary Movie, Date, Movie, etc and just apes scenes from other films? It becomes less funny. The funniest aspects of the film are not parody moments, and it disappoints me that the people who brought us the wackiness of Airplane are reducing themselves to these films. These mock the superior parody films of the late 70’s and early 80’s. There are clear hints of good jokes, but they are ultimately trapped in a less than funny overall film.

What is the worst part of watching any of these films though? In the end it is seeing people so worthy of much better material being used in such crap.

What will Microsoft “Midori” mean to Lotus

Posted by PASTener | 8/05/2008 04:17:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Recent discussion around the still somewhat “Under Wraps” project code-named Midori at Microsoft is suggesting a Microsoft Future “Post-Windows”. This, and the rise of industry interest in Virtiualisation, SaaS, and Cloud Computing, all point to a near-term future where consumption of software services will go through a significant disrupting period that will affect us all.

The Midori research is Microsoft’s effort at potentially making significant inroads into market-share for the operating system of a Cloud Future. Many Vendors are already on track to produce offerings for this future. IBM have their Blue House Initiative in the Lotus Space.

If Microsoft can use their Brand power to capture the market with an early Type-1 Hypervisor like Midori, it will have quite a bit of influence on this space going forward. (And the tacit support of Microsoft as a delivery model)

For resellers of products of Microsoft or IBM’s Lotus Brand, it is now time to consider an impending sales model for this “Desktopless” future. It will have a significant impact on their business.

While we have seen the problems inherant in the SaaS models with early adopters like Saleforce.com, it is only a matter of time before Quality of Service via the Internet improves to acceptable levels for greater uptake.

Love vs Heartbreaks

Posted by PASTener | 8/05/2008 04:17:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Love vs Heartbreaks. In my opinion, we all have to go through love and heartbreak in order to grow as a person; in order to figure out what we want and what we don’t want. Obviously, you first need love in order to experience heartbreak. Or… you need to experience lust. I guess maybe I should have called this Love vs Lust vs Heartbreaks. But, for now we’ll just say lust and love are the same thing! Even though they’re not. Alright fine lets talk about lust as well (get used to it, my mind loves to wander away while I’m deep in thoughts! lol) Lust and love are 2 of the most exciting and wonderful life experiences one will ever go through. If you’ve ever felt it, you know what I’m talking about.

Imagine the first “date” you had with that someone you liked. Imagine the stuff you said, how you felt, the way you looked into each others eyes. Maybe you were nervous. Maybe you were excited. Maybe you were scared cause you knew that you liked that person and you didn’t want to get hurt. Do you remember that first kiss? Maybe it was unexpected. Maybe you had it all planned. But, either way, if you felt anything for that person, the first kiss was most likely a very memorable kiss. Its like all of a sudden you’re in a hypnotic stage. No one else around you. Just you and that person. Feeling weak in the knees, feeling like you just experienced the most amazing thing in your life. Such a rush.

And then comes the next exciting stage. You start dating! So many emotions go through you when you start to know that person! The more you know about him/her the more you want to know even more. You want to spend every possible minute with him/her! You just cant… get… enough… Before you know it, you’re lying in bed, kissing passionately and intensely and you have sex for the first time. Sure, for some of us, it happens quicker than others, but nonetheless, It was probably the best you’ve felt in a long time? It probably made you feel special? Wanted? You probably felt an even deeper connection? Maybe it was at that exact moment that you were in love?! Whatever you felt, if you had any sort of connection with that person, I’m sure it was AMAZING.

And then, you fall in love! You feel like you’re going to spend the rest of your life with that person. Maybe you feel like you’re going to marry him/her. You have it all planned out. You’re going to get married in a little ceremony with just a few guests, and have your honeymoon.

Robert Deniro is close to signing a deal to star alongside Mel Gibson in “Edge of Darkness”, a film adapted from a BBC TV mini series. The film is directed by Martin Campbell and shooting begins this month in Massachussetts.

Mel Gibson plays a homicide detective whose 24 year old daughter was murdered on the front steps of his home, he assumed that he was the target, but then he investigates his daughter’s secret life and her past. Deniro will play an operative who helps cleans up the evidence.

Mel Gibson’s last acting role to the big screen was M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs” way back in 2002. Mel then made a vow to stay away from acting and concentrate on directing with such films like “The Passion” and “Apocalypto”. So much for Mel’s acting retirement since he is back in leading roles again.

Variety reports:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117989930.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

The question is will Mel do “Lethal Weapon 5″ or “Mad Max 4″?

I don’t want another “Lethal Weapon” film but another Mad Max would be great.

Review - Girl Interrupted

Posted by PASTener | 8/02/2008 02:53:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

I watched “Girl Interrupted” today. Decent film….kind of a cross between Slaughterhouse 5, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Little Women. Two things stood out to me:

1. The opening line of the film, spoken by Winona Rider: “Have you ever confused a dream with life or stolen something when you have the cash?” Ironic, heh? Poor Winona.

2. What is with Angelina Jolie’s hair??

Scarecrow

A really bad wig with ultra short bangs….I don’t get it. What were they going for here? She doesn’t look like a natural blond here, which I’m sure they could have achieved. Is she supposed to look like her character had a really bad dye job? But then why cut the bangs like that..a symptom of the craziness? I don’t know, but it was distracting, like the hair-do itself was its own character.

The ending was a bit anti-climatic. It didn’t take much for Winona (Susanna) to convince Jolie (Lisa) not to stab her with the syringe (where did she get that anyhow and what was in there???). But it was also kind of nice to not have the movie turn in to Single White Female, so I guess I’ll take it. I recommend this for anyone who has to hang out on the couch for a long time.

Review: The Dark Knight

Posted by PASTener | 8/02/2008 02:53:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

I was never a fan of the Batman character. A very wealthy man playing superhero with gadgets only he can afford, to foil crooks from money he obviously doesn’t lack. I preferred perpetually broke Spiderman. After hearing the phenomenal reviews and ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, I got curious. Just how well written can a bombastic summer action blockbuster be? I tend to prefer smaller indy films with good scripts, yet decided to venture in the movieplex with the expectation that The Dark Knight was way overrated. Boy, was I surprised.

The Good Stuff
Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s screenplay and Christopher’s direction is above and beyond what viewers usually get from these action blockbusters. I am pleased that it has finally dawned on some of these studio execs that people will reward you, if you don’t insult their intelligence. Nolan’s adaptation adds ethical dilemma and alludes to contemporary issues like intrusive surveillance, torture and corruption in some of the institutions we rely so much on to get our sense of security. They also put a ruthless variation of the Prisoner’s Dilemma to add to the psychological and ethical tension. The characters are well fleshed out and the storytelling compelling.

The acting was solid, and Heath Ledger’s Joker is probably the darkest and most sinister portrayed on the screen. While his fine performance might not quite be Oscar worthy, he’s likely going to get serious consideration since it was his last role before his tragic death. Aaron Eckhart did excellent job in the role of righteous DA Harvey Dent, a performance that might be easily overlooked facing Ledger’s intense presence. Christian Bale’s Batman was competent, acting behind a mask using a raspy voice limits one’s ability to show a nuanced performance.

The Quibbles

FX and score overwhelm dialogue: This has happened in various instances where I couldn’t sort out the dialogue from the booming sounds. I’m not sure whether it was the cinema’s issue or the sound editor, but it did distract me enough to mention it.

Batman’s raspy voice: Mentioned above. It makes some sense that Batman would attempt to disguise his voice not to be recognized, but Bale’s raspy voice does not make him “creepy” and just hampers comprehension and performance. I hope that Nolan will have Bale just use his regular voice in future films and the audience will forgive that. It’s already tough acting through a mask and the voice didn’t help.

Bale Want’s To See More Sex In Batman Movies

Posted by PASTener | 8/02/2008 02:53:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

I was quite shocked today when I stumbled across this recent quote from Christian Bale:

“I do think there is room for an 18-rated Batman. It’s a little bit tricky to broach the sex aspect of the story when you want kids to come see it as well. I mean, I think it would be very interesting to do a 12 version and an 18 version - two different cuts.”

Boy-o-boy does that get me thinking.

I guess if Bale really wants to see more adult action in Batman movies, then the next film should just take it’s cue from the Thomas Wayne orgy revelation in the ongoing Batman RIP story arc. Tickets sales would surely go through the roof on a movie that features Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wayne doing the nasty with Alfred and group of anonymous strangers. On second thought having Michael Caine in a sex scene just might destroy my very last shred of sanity.

In all seriousness though I guess a little more sex really couldn’t hurt the Batman movie franchise. As long as it’s handled tastefully. Bruce Wayne is an attractive playboy billionaire so it is logical to assume he has a active sex life. Even if his true passion is crime fighting, he must keep up the apperance of a self-centered billionaire by making love to gorgeous woman. Truly he has a hard life.

More Cool/Free iPhone Apps

Posted by PASTener | 8/02/2008 02:38:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

Although I still stand on my former article on my favorite iPhone Apps, here are a few more free iPhone Apps I’ve tried and still use.

1. WeatherBug- This is a great app, and I was shocked it was free. It’s basically a Weather application (obviously) that not only gives you a temperature forecast, but also Humidity, Heat Index, Wind Velocity, Wind Direction, Gust Velocity, and even Dew Point. The second portion is a Google Maps Radar and shows you storms all around the globe and which direction they’re heading. The third portion is web-cams from near your location so you can physically “see” the weather near you. As an added bonus, the App provides “Active Alerts” which show up on the app even when your on the home screen in the form of a little “1″. The Active Alerts can consist of Droughts, T-Storms, Snow, etc. Great app, worth $10 to me.

2. Palringo Instant Messenger- Palringo Instant Messenger is the first multi-client IM app to come to the App Store. It’s free just like the standard AIM app, but on Palringo it’s better because you can see all your buddies on every client. Not only that, but as an added bonus you can send photos from your iPhone’s Camera Roll. Simple, easy, works, free.

3. 1Password- This self-explanatory free application keeps up with all your passwords in one simple way, has an optional 2 layers of password protection on your passwords. Free. Get it?

So, those are some Apps to fill up your new 8/16GB iPhone. Try em. If you have any tips, questions, comments, concerns, you can tell me.

Actually, I want the white one. But I can’t find good images of that version.

I’m going to put this at my wishlist! I really need a netbook, regular notebook is too large and heavy (my notebook is 12″ wide and less than 3kg), besides it doesn’t suit my mobile activity. While netbook, not only small, but also has the feature I love the most : INTERNET!

Ubuntu Sound and Login Screen Resolution Fixes

Posted by PASTener | 8/02/2008 02:38:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Configuring Hardy Heron has been a bitch; finally got around to fixing two nagging issues.

1. Sound: Ubuntu 8.04 has been infamous for having serious issues with sound. The fairly easy thing to do would be to build the ALSA modules all over again using the module-assistant package.

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

Reboot.

This seemed to have resolved most of my sound problems.

2. Login Screen resolution: I’ve had this problem with all distributions thus far; the text size on the login screen is so large that it’s, well, invisible. Go figure. The fix:

sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

(Find)

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/bin/X -br -audit 0

(Change to)

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/bin/X -br -audit 0 -dpi 96

Reboot.

Resistance 2 vs. Gears of War 2:The Comparison

Posted by PASTener | 7/29/2008 03:03:00 PM | | 0 comments »

When you first look at these two titles you would think that there couldn’t be much of a comparison other than they are shooters. When you pull back the curtain on these two games you will see quite a bit in common. This is basically a comparison of what I’ve seen so far and it’s a personal opinion.I’ll be buying both games in November.

Storyline:

Resistance 2 is set immediately following the events of Resistance 1.Taking Nathan Hale to Iceland then to the United States where to Chimera are invading. Fighting off Alien invasions is a specialty in the States here.

(This is some speculation and some educated guessing since not much is known about Gears 2)

Gears of War 2 takes place not long after the events of the first one.Marcus and Delta Squad are trying to get to the last holdout of humanity in a town built over rock the Locust can’t get through. We’ll see what happened to Dom’s wife apparently also.

So basically, fighting off Alien Invasion.Check. It’ll be a tossup in the story dept it looks like.

Advantage:Tie

Trailers

Resistance 2 has had two trailers released. A teaser showing the battle in San Fransico and a brilliant trailer involving a radio announcer and desperation of the battle with the Chimera. One great spot in the trailer is the look on Nathan Hale’s face. It shows a soldier who is tired, angry and ready for war.Just that glimpse get’s you pumped for this game.

Gears 2 gets the nod in the trailer dept. The original Madworld trailer was brilliant and Epic continues with it’s new Rendezvous trailer. Youtube and take a look. It shows Marcus walking into a battle in the caverns with the Locust and he’s using a Locust as a shield to charge into battle. The action is good, but the overall tone of the trailer makes it great.

Advantage :Gears of War 2

Weapons

Insomniac is known for making great guns in games and Resistance 2 is another example. Most of the weapons from Resistance 1 are there(except for the Hailstorm apparently). Now,there’s a Magnum that fires exploding bullets that can be detonated? Amazing. I’m sure there are even more surprises in store and I can’t wait

A gun with a chainsaw.Yes,that should be enough right? Well, theres new weapons like a poison grenade and Gorgon burst pistol,a hand cranked mini-gun. Even with all that,I have to say I really like what Insominac has done with their weapons better. Gears 2 guns look fun though

How Cool is Cuil?

Posted by PASTener | 7/29/2008 03:03:00 PM | | 0 comments »

There’s a new challenger to Google, the 800-pound gorilla of Internet search engines: www.Cuil.com, which looks French but was developed by American ex-Google engineers backed by $33 million in venture capital. Pronounced “cool,” the site began processing search requests Monday.

Cuil (apparently also a Gaelic word for knowledge) promises to search 121 billion Web pages — three times more than Google, it claims – and to deliver more relevant and helpful results. According to Cuil’s site, its technology burrows into the content of each page to place results in better context than search engines that rank quantity of links to Web sites. Unlike Google, Cuil also promises not to collect data about its users’ search histories.

Like a lot of curious folks Monday, I did a few random Cuil searches and compared the results to Google. If sheer numbers mean anything, my highly unscientific test revealed that Cuil has some catching up to do. A search for “Beijing Olympics” produced 20 million pages on Google, 1.1 million on Cuil. “Barack Obama” got 58 million Google hits; on Cuil, less than 6.5 million. Google also led its Obama results with recent news headlines about the presidential candidate, while Cuil’s first page of Obama hits contained only biographical information from Wikipedia and his official Senate/campaign sites.

In fairness, though, we should probably give Cuil a few days to rev its engine up to full speed. A Cuil search Monday morning for “Siamese cats” pulled up nothing; you had to type in “Siamese cat” to get any results. By Monday afternoon that glitch was fixed, and “Siamese cats” produced 43,000 hits. Cuil also appeared to be overwhelmed by traffic from curious users, because another search Monday afternoon produced a near-blank page with the message, “Due to excessive load, our servers didn’t return results.”

I like Cuil’s reader-friendly format, which arrays results in a magazine-like layout complete with thumbnail images and a few sentences of text instead of Google’s bare-bones, pancake stack of links. I don’t think “Cuiling” will replace “Googling” in the popular lexicon anytime soon, but it seems like a promising alternative. What do you think?

Seven Secrets of Great Sleep

Posted by PASTener | 7/27/2008 07:24:00 AM | | 0 comments »

How many of us are facing the trouble getting a good night’s rest? I think should be more than 90% of us facing this kind of preblem… including me sometimes.
Here is the simple tips can help you find that longed-for slumber.
1. Eat and live healthily : - If you think by putting some alcohol or sleeping pill can help on it, I think you got the wrong idea. This just can lead to restless sleep, especially during the second half of the night. The result, you can hardly drag yourself out of the bed in the next morning and listless and drowsy through out the day. Heavy meal before the bedtime also a no no and not advisable from doctor. You might try some hot chocalate or milk (with some honey) before you bedtime.

2. Relax : - people who lead busy and stressful lives often have trouble sleeping. The best way to avoid it, keep a book next to your bed or under your pillow. Take sometimes to read it before go for the dream. Besides that, you might choose to ghang around with your partner or friends to “Clear up” the day after a stressful and busy day.

3. Exercise :- I am not asking you exercise all the day. At least spend 3 days or 4 days for a simple jogging, swimming or bicycle ride for an hour or more. This will help you increase your deep sleep phase.

4. Improve your bedroom :- choose a good quality mattress and use curtains or blinds to darken the room. Let the window slightly open so the fresh air can move into the room before the bedtime.

5. Go to bed at the right time :- go to the bed and get up at about the same time every day. Putting youself more sleep at weekend doesn’t make up for too little sleep during the week. If you have sleeping problem, please don’t take a nap at midday as this will make you more difficult to sleep at night.

6. Create a bedtime ritual :- a good bath can make you sleep even with a lavender oil to relaxing your mind.

7. Get up rather than toss and turn :- if you can’t sleep, get up. Don’t make yourself like a tosted chicken, lamb or whatever. Don’t always keep track on your clock it doesn’t help you by spred some magic spell on you…forget about it! Read some book or watch TV, when you feel tired then go back to bed.

The above tips can help in many case if you are patience enough….

New Options Secure Your Gmail Connections

Posted by PASTener | 7/27/2008 07:17:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

Time to chuck out those add-ons and Greasemonkey scripts, Gmail now offers the ability to only use https connections for secure webmail.

Security savvy readers are probably using either a Greasemonkey script or a browser add-on to do just that, but now you can control that setting from Gmail’s settings without the need for outside tools. To active https connections, head to settings and under the “general” tab at the bottom of page you’ll find the new option.

The good news is that your ability to connect via https is no longer limited to browsers with scripts or add-ons installed — it works everywhere.

Well, almost everywhere. The only caveat is for those of you with older versions of the Gmail Mobile app, which apparently doesn’t always play nice over secure connections. Google engineers are reportedly at work on the problem, but in the mean time Google recommends holding off on the “always use https” option or updating to the latest version of Gmail Mobile.

If you’re wondering why you’d want to use an https connection instead of a normal http connection the answer is that the secure connection prevents snoops from seeing your mail. If you’re at the public wifi hotspot using a plain http connection, anyone with one of the easily available snooping tools on the web can intercept and read all your mail — and that’s not good.

Why didn’t Google offer secure connections from the beginning? No idea, but at least they do now so make the change today. And remember to delete any Greasemonkey scripts or add-ons that duplicate the functionality since there could be conflicts.

Call of Duty : All Series part 1

Posted by PASTener | 7/21/2008 05:21:00 AM | | 0 comments »

If you are unfamiliar with the Call of Duty series, then i will give you a brief rundown before the preview. CoD is set in World War II except for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which is set in (duh) modern times. Most common developer names are Activision and Infinity Ward, but there are others such as Pi Studios and Treyarch. All CoD games are first-person shooters and most of them were released for the PC/Windows.

Call of Duty

The first of the series. Is definently a favorite of mine, no matter how old. It was realeased in October 2003 for the PC as a first person shooter, which is how all of them are so far. It was published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward and was set in WWII. There is a N-Gage version and also an expansion pack.

Call of Duty: Finest Hour

CoD: FH is a console version of Call of Duty for the PC. It was released for the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube in November 2004. It is based on the original, again in WWII, but with a completely different storyline. Cool facts about this game is that Michael Giacchino composes the music and AC/DC singer Brian Johnson provides the voice for the British commander.

Call of Duty: United Offensive

CoD: United Offensive is the expansion pack to the original CoD, it was released in September 2004. It adds more options and more online maps.

Call of Duty 2

Call of Duty 2 is the sequel to the original CoD and another first-person shooter. Again, it was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It was released in October 2005 for the PC and released in November ‘05 for the Xbox 360. This game is also set and WWII and is known for it’s D-Day level.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One

Another addition to the CoD series released for home consoles in November 2005. This game differs from the other because it focuses on the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, which went by the nickname ‘Big Red One’. The box cover features actor Stephen Saux.

Call of Duty 3

The third installment in the CoD series released for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Xbox, and PS2 in November 2006. This game was the first major Call of Duty installment NOT released for the PC. This game also includes a couple of Polish missions.

Call of Duty: Roads to Victory

Another WWII shooter released for the PlayStation Portable in March 2007. Has 14 total missions.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Another shooter released by, our favorites, Infinity Ward and Activision. The forth installment in our CoD series quest. Except, this time, we steer away from WWII and go into modern times. So, instead of a Thompson SMG, you have an AK-47. It was released for the PS3, PC, and 360 in November 2007. The multiplayer now includes weapons attachments that you can personalize. It won many awards including “Best Xbox 360 Game”.

Call of Duty: World at War

The fifth installment underdevelopment game of the CoD series. It is currently being ‘under’ developed by Treyarch, who developed CoD 3, and published by Activision. Because of new developers, i believe that there may be a downgrade in graphics, but there are rumors going around that because of the amazing CoD 4 engine, they may be enhanced. The game is set in the Pacific theater (U.S. vs. Japan) and the Eastern Front (Russia) during WWII. Swimming elements will be introduced to the series for the first time in single player and multiplayer. Flamethrowers, first introduced in Call of Duty: United Offensive, will be reintroduced with new flammable environments. There will also be a more open environment with multiple ways to complete a mission. World at War will feature cooperative gameplay (4 player split on consoles or 4 players online for Windows). Vehicles are back along with squad based missions. Weapon customization will be on WaW such as adding a bayonet to certain guns or a basic gernade launcher. Boats will be avaiable with limited firepower. To help simulate the Japanese’s different style of warfare, Treyarch has completely re-tinkered the enemy AI in World at War. Instead of taking cover and flanking in traditional European battle strategies, the Japanese hide in trees, sneak through the overgrowth and scrabble, katana in hand in violent suicide attacks.

The App Store for iPhone 2.0

Posted by PASTener | 7/19/2008 02:58:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

The day the iPhone 2.0 firmware upgrade came out, I spent most of the afternoon trying to connect to the overloaded servers to upgrade my phone. While I waited, I perused the App Store for apps, downloading the ones I wanted to try so that they would be ready to sync right away. I’ve trying out a few different apps that everyone seems to get like Remote, and I have a few others that I havenbeen ‘t really used yet, but thought I might want. But there are four (free [except for Vay]) apps that make me love my iPhone all over again: Twitterrific, Pandora, Aurora Feint, and Vay.

Twitterrific is a twitter client for the iPhone. I had used the Twitter web app before, and it got the job done. Twitterrific not only gets the job done, but it looks good, is well-implemented, and adds lots of new options for mobile tweets, including automatically adding photos from the camera to twitpic when you select a photo for a tweet. If you have an iPhone 3G, you can even geotag your tweets.

Pandora has been a popular internet radio service for a while, where you create stations from songs and artists that you like. Pandora plays music similar to & including what you listed. With this service on the iPhone, you basically have an infinite number of songs available for your listening pleasure.

Vay is the first RPG to show up on the iPhone. It was originally released for Sega CD in 1994 so it is a great way to get your 90’s Japanese RPG fix in wherever you are. It’s the first app I’ve actually paid for ($4.99) after Ben posted a tweet about it. The controls work well and the battle graphics have been slightly ramped up. Plus, thanks to my penchant for compulsively leveling up, I should be able to get nearly infinite game play out of this.

Finally, Aurora Feint (The Beginning), is an addictive puzzle game that makes great use of the accelerometer for changing the puzzles’ orientation to gravity. You can level up to gain new abilities and make it easier to gather resources. Given that this app was made in a pretty short period of time, I expect that subesquent chapters of this iPhone only MMO will be something to watch out for.

Make firefox faster

Posted by PASTener | 7/19/2008 02:58:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

Yes, firefox is already pretty damn fast but did you know that you can tweak it and improve the speed even more?

That’s the beauty of this program being open source.
Here’s what you do:
In the URL bar, type “about:config” and press enter. This will bring up the configuration “menu” where you can change the parameters of Firefox.

Note that these are what I’ve found to REALLY speed up my Firefox significantly - and these settings seem to be common among everybody else as well. But these settings are optimized for broadband connections - I mean with as much concurrent requests we’re going to open up with pipelining… lol… you’d better have a big connection.

Double Click on the following settins and put in the numbers below - for the true / false booleans - they’ll change when you double click.

Code:
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true
network.http.max-connections – 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4
network.http.pipelining – true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining – true
network.http.request.timeout – 300

One more thing… Right-click somewhere on that screen and add a NEW -> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. Since you’re broadband - it shouldn’t have to wait.

Now you should notice you’re loading pages MUCH faster now!

Zune vs. iPod

Posted by PASTener | 7/19/2008 02:52:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

If you don’t know what a Zune is, I’m not surprised. It is Microsoft’s mp3 player. They haven’t been selling very well, but how can you compete with the iPod?

Since most people don’t know anything about them, I’m constantly asked how I like it. So here it is.

The Zune has some great features. I love the ability to customize the background of my Menu. I’ve also used the FM radio several times. But surprisingly enough, I have only used the Wireless feature once. With a Zune, you can wirelessly transfer music from one Zune to another. It will detect other Zunes within a certain range and allow you to beam an entire album in about a minute. But nobody has a Zune so it’s pretty much a useless feature.

One thing I have noticed that really annoys me is that there is a several second delay imposed by the Zune between songs. It disturbs the flow of a lot of the dance/techno albums that I listen to on occasion and is pretty frustrating.

I love my Zune, but it’s more of a sentimental love. I didn’t expect it to last very long, but it has. It’s also been a pretty good conversation starter. However, if I were offered the choice, I would probably take an iPod over a Zune. The Zune software just flat out sucks (you can’t manage the device through iTunes) and there is absolutely no Mac compatibility. Those are two things that I just can’t put up with for too long. But it works well enough and it only cost me $80 (thank you woot.com!) I am happy with what I’ve got and there is no reason to change over to an iPod just yet. Later this summer though? This piece of junk might just be headed for the trash. The frustrating part will be reloading my Dave Matthews and Led Zeppelin collections onto yet another mp3 player.

Google Docs: Now With Templates!

Posted by PASTener | 7/19/2008 02:44:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

This is a couple of days old, but I thought I’d share it any way. I haven’t seen much about it in the blogosphere. Maybe with all the iPhone hype of the last couple of weeks this little tidbit of news got lost.

Google posted on its Official Google Docs Blog on Wednesday, that they’ve introduce templates to Google Docs. I zipped over to my Google Docs to have a look. It looks like they have quite an extensive library of templates for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. It’s very similar in scope to what’s available for Microsoft Office.

Google says they’ve teamed up with Avery Dennison, Vertex42.com, TemplateZone, and Visa Business to create templates for all aspects of life, job hunting or wedding planning, for example, or running a business with invoices and letter head.

Google Docs is getting better and more feature-rich all the time. Now that they’ve added offline access to documents, it’s a wonder who will really need to pay Microsoft for office applications.

The Internet Makes Us Fat

Posted by PASTener | 7/19/2008 02:34:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

A few days ago, the LA Times published a collection of articles titled “What’s making us fat?” in which they briefly summarize each of the latest fads…I mean “theories”…about why Americans, specifically those living in the US, have become more and more obese in the past 30 years.

The article left out one important theory–mine. As the title of this post indicates, my theory is that the invention of the Internet has made us fat. All that time in front of computers has made us fat. We are chained to our desk because IM has made us too lazy to get up and walk the 20 feet to our co-worker’s desk. We no longer have to thumb through the yellow pages or actually dial a phone. Google does it for us from the convenience of our browser. Leg work has been replaced by finger work, and we don’t even lift our wrists to type. We rest them on gel-filled, ergonomic wrist rests. We don’t even use dictionaries any more. Just right click the word with the red squiggles under it and the browser will spell it for you.

So, the next time someone asks you why America is getting fatter, blame Al Gore, and rest assured that the rest of the world will be joining us as they become more and more wired.

Dark Knight

Posted by PASTener | 7/18/2008 09:32:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

Don’t worry, no spoilers. I’ll keep it to initial thoughts since that’s all I can muster right now. The Dark Knight , of course, lives up to the hype. Heath Ledger even more so. I am now totally at peace with the (previously partially unsubstantiated) rally calls for a posthumous Oscar nod.

I can’t really formulate a full critique at this time, because I couldn’t completely soak in its countless thematic elements and nuances. You never can with any film on a first viewing, much less one with a plot as involved as TDK.

Analyzing a film beyond the plot is impossible in a theater full of jackasses in clown makeup trying to do the Joker laugh every time Heath Ledger hits the screen. Just about every moment of comic relief and every clever nuance of Heath’s performance (the key to it is his countless brilliant subtleties) was ruined by the guy next to me with the uneven Transformers tattoo quoting back lines from the Joker’s previous scene. And he’d do it a split second before the punchline.

We’re talking about the crossroad where quality art hits a saturation point that will make you hate it. We’re talking a level of destruction unseen seen since Dave Chappelle. Come next week, people will be “why so serious”-ing in your face at every turn. I saw it starting mid-premiere.

What could I expect? It’s a midnight showing of a geek franchise film. Of course I would be in a theater with overexcited fanboys - hell, I’m one of them. But holy shit people, get a life. This was worse than any midnight showing I’ve ever been to. Star Wars, Spider-man, you name it.

The good news is that this is a film that needs to be seen at least two or three times before you truly understand everything Chris Nolan is saying. The element of chaos brought by the Joker is perfectly conveyed in the film - you have absolutely no idea what will happen next, and you’ll make yourself dizzy trying to think ahead. The film is complex and done with an artistic integrity unmatched in the genre. I don’t need to tell you to see it, because you will anyway. Just, for the sake of the audience, don’t start clapping every single time Heath Ledger darts a sinister look.

How To Get High Search Engine Rankings

Posted by PASTener | 7/18/2008 09:25:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

Every single website master wants to get to the top of the search engine rankings. Despite me telling them that often this doesn’t produce the best quality traffic and that there are many other sources of traffic, every website owner I know and I’ve spoken to wants to be at the top of the search engines; Google in particular.

So if you want to be top of the pile for all your key phrases and keywords, how do you actually do it?

Well, you need to play the search engines at their own game. What I mean by this is don’t try and beat the search engines system. Too many people get caught up in the trap of trying to beat the system. They hear about a new trick or a new gimmick and they think it will send them to the top of the search engines.

Don’t forget that search engines, Google in particular, spend millions and millions every single year trying to combat these types of techniques. They have scientific buffoons in white coats trying to keep people from beating the system. So don’t try and beat the system with the search engines. You need to play by their rules.

Now although all search engines are unique, they do have some similarities when it comes to the criteria on which they rank websites. The criteria behind the search engines algorithms are always kept secret, but generally they are looking for the same things.

Search engines are looking for which phrases you have on your website and the weighting of the key phrases and keywords. They also look at how much of a resource they think your website is and at how many quality websites are linking to you. Finally, and most importantly, the search engines look at how relevant they think your website is.

Google’s ethos, for example, is all about relevancy. The more relevant you can be to people looking for some information on Google, the greater your chances of being highly ranked.

Now this means changing focus and becoming a leading authority and a number one resource for your particular business sector. You need to move away from one narrow theme and extend your content to other related areas.
When search engines look at the phrases that you have and the weighting of these phrases, they’re making sure that you don’t have too many key phrases on one page or that you don’t have one particular word mentioned over and over again. Posted by PASTener | 7/15/2008 01:27:00 PM | , , | 0 comments »

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Ryan Stewart’s Flex SEO contest (also known as the “Fleximagically Searchable” contest). As I posted earlier, I believe the best and correct method for “making Flash indexable” is not to index Flash at all, but rather to index the data. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I could get Google to index my content but link to my Flex application and I finally found a mechanism to do this! However, upon very close reading of Ryan’s rules I see that he specifically does not want this solution—he wants the content to be indexed by Googlebot “interacting” with the application.

That’s just silly.

For data-driven sites—which would be most Web sites with Flex front-ends—this is an completely artificial restriction. The only place where this would make any sense is for applications that do not dynamically load content, but rather dynamically generate content, such as for client-side mash-ups. Additionally, according to Google “if your Flash file loads an HTML file, an XML file, another SWF file, etc., Google will separately index that resource, but it will not yet be considered to be part of the content in your Flash file.” That implies that dynamically loaded content must be RPC-based (and binary?) to be considered part of your SWF (as Ryan Stewart desires) instead of a separate resource. Yuck!

I will continue with my planned solution because demonstrating the technique and learning how well it works for SEO will provide valuable information for the community.

Finally, I’d like to announce that I’ve purchased the domain fleximagicallysearchable.com for this contest1. There is nothing there now, but I would like to turn it into a blog or user forum for discussing Flex SEO strategies and make it a resource that lives beyond this contest, continuing to be useful in the future by providing tutorials and covering the emerging best practices for Flash and Flex SEO.

Time To Know How Google Work?

Posted by PASTener | 7/15/2008 01:19:00 PM | , | 0 comments »

A lot of people have used Google but few have any idea as to the complexity and computer power necessary to return billions of queries with millions of results all in under a second. This isn’t by accident, an oversight by Google or even due to security concerns, Google believes in not making search seem complicated to users. This notion is perhaps best illustrated in Google’s “Technology Overview”, which uses just 5 images and 4 sentences to explain the “Life of a Google Query”.

Despite Google’s simplistic interface, search is complicated. For example when a user in San Francisco enters a query like google.com/search?q=blogoscoped, the user’s browser first completes a DNS lookup mapping www.google.com to a specific IP address. At this stage, Google’s DNS load balancer determines which cluster of computers at which of Google’s 36+ data centers will process the query.

If the nearest data center isn’t available to process the query, it’s passed on to the nearest available data center. (For this example, the nearest known data centers might be Mountain View, CA, Pleasanton, CA, San Jose, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Palo Alto, CA, Seattle, WA, Portland, OR and/or The Dalles, OR.) Once a data center has been determined, the query is transmitted via “HTTP” to a specific data center and individual cluster of 1,800 or more servers.

Upon arrival at the data center cluster, each query is greeted by Google’s second load balancer. The Google hardware load balancer consists of 10 to 15 machines and determines which machines are available to process the query. The hardware load balancer then earmarks and hands off the query to a Google Mixer. This “Google Mixer” software, will later combine all of the elements of Universal search results with the right blend of ads. The Mixer, queries a number of Google Web Servers (GWS), selecting one available to execute the query.

The query is then executed, simultaneously hitting 300 to 400 back-end machines representing Google’s verticals, advertising and spell check among others. At this point the best results are gathered and the query data returns to the Google Mixer. The mixer takes this data, blends Universal elements with ads while pasting results in order based on relevancy. The ordered results then go back to the GWS for HTML coding. Once the HTML is completed and pages formatted, the search engine results are marked “done” by the load balancer and returned to the user as search engine results pages (SERPs). The entire process taking, about 3 centiseconds or three times as long as it takes a lightning bolt traveling at 186,000 miles per second to strike.

Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Click on the “Advanced” tab -> Scroll down to the “Printing” section and turn on the “Print background colors and images” checkbox.

A new study is out from The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Google, and IBM that has some interesting things to say about web browsers and security. For example:
Firefox users were found to be the most likely to use the latest version of that browser. Apple Safari users were second. Microsoft Internet Exploiter Explorer was dead last. This is important because the study noted that failing to keep browser software updated greatly increases web surfers’ online security vulnerability to attacks. So this result means that Firefox users are more likely to be secure than any other browser.

The study also reported that Internet Explorer had 1.1 billion users or 78.3 per cent, Firefox had 227 million users or 16.1 per cent, Safari 48 million users or 3.4 per cent, and Opera just 11 million users or 0.8 per cent. This means that if I were a “evil doer” who wanted to target web surfers, I’d target Internet Explorer (after all, most other “evil doers” already do) as there’s more of those users out there which means that I am more likely to to get a browser that is not up to date.

Having recently reinstalled Windows on a couple of different PC’s I can tell you first hand it can be a pain getting your hands on the right driver for your sound card, video card, network card, etc., not to mention all the rebooting you’ll be doing while installing them.

To save yourself some trouble after you’ve formatted your drive and it’s too late to see what drivers you’ll need, check out a program called DriverMax which can take care of everything for you.

Using DriverMax you’ll be able to easily export a copy of the various drivers your Windows PC is using (to a drive you’re not formatting, of course), then once you’ve formatted things and need your drivers again, install DriverMax and import your drivers back into your computer and you’ll make sure you have the same drivers you started out with. Plus, you’ll just need one reboot for all drivers that are imported instead potentially needing a different reboot for each driver you install.

I haven’t used this program first hand so I can’t say from experience how good/bad it is, but next time I reinstall Windows I’ll definitely check it out.

This free program is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 2003 (server).

Four important security updates from Microsoft

Posted by PASTener | 7/10/2008 04:34:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

Microsoft will issue four security updates for its Windows, Exchange, SQL and software products next Tuesday. All of them have the status of “important”. Vulnerabilities in Exchange and SQL related to increased rights. This means that hackers attack while trying on a computer in theory could gain administrative access to a PC. One of the vulnerabilities OS Windows - so the title of the “deceptive move” by using that hackers may force the user to view malicious Web sites in the Internet.

“Four update addresses a vulnerability in Windows, using the hacker which can run arbitrary code on the victim’s PC” - said Microsoft. Usually, this type of vulnerability is assessed as “critical” of Microsoft, but in this case vulnerability nadan lowest rating was in danger because it can not take without the assistance of the user who will be tentatively set themselves on a PC or special software drivers — said Erik Schulz (Eric Schultze), chief technical department at Shavlik Technologies. This vulnerability security, which enables arbitrary code on the victim affects only PCs with the established system Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

The vulnerability affects SQL software products Microsoft SQL Server, as well as internal software SQL, which went along with some versions of Windows. It does not cause harm to users of OS Vista or XP, but users of Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 should be careful and install security patches from Microsoft.

Its actual purpose is still a bit of a mystery, but all shall be revealed in good course…

I have to say one thing about Twitter users on the web; they are dedicated. Despite server downtime and frustration showing in users it seems Hitwise has tracked major growth.

From the above it seems that Twitter is far from done at this rate. Is it the interface? The ability to use it relatively easily with your cell phone? Is it the fact that a number of applications and extensions, like Twhirl, have been written with the Twitter API and are having success? Whatever it is, it seems to be working, especially with exponential growth like this! It would be neat to see this graph in a month.

While some of us like commenting on Friendfeed for the sake of the “conversation,” it’s quite minimal still in traffic comparison. And if anyone can tell me what happened at Plurk in March I would appreciate it.

You may see the ‘Done, but with errors on page’ message often while browsing web pages.

It is in bottom left corner of the statusbar and has an Yellow exlamation sign.

Do not be afraid to view the site.

Actually, the message ‘Done, but with errors on page’ means that there is some javascript errors on this page. This is because of webdesigners’ errors, not your browser error.

May be some animations or some funcionallities will not work proper but site is still visible.

This is not yours problem so do not panic.

The message ‘done, but with errors on page’ will not harm your computer in no means.

The webmasters have to check their sites often and if such a message appears, it is better for them to repair javascript code.

It was only after I cleaned up facebook that I realized fb allows us so much freedom to customize what we want to see and what we do not want to see.

It started with the “Extended Profile” option. I struggled with disappearing apps and unneeded stubborn apps on my profile until I found to hide them under the extended profile option. I also found this useful in bringing out the apps I only want to see updated each time I view my profile. One thing I notice when I drag apps around, a dark grey dotted box will appear and the dark grey text inside will say, “This box will be in the extended portion of your profile.” There, I found the key to not mess up the hidden app boxes and the non-hidden ones.

All applications I own are listed in the left-hand menu directly under the facebook logo. By taking some time to clear up my apps commitment, I also removed some apps boxes from my profile. The century-old Graffiti app is removed (non-artists are as lazy to lift a pencil as a mouse to draw). Send Free Ice-cream, Send Free Branded Bags, Send Free Monkeys and the like, are also removed. I really don’t like sitting around, waiting for people who most likely find these “sending free stuff” apps a nuisance, to like that app, and one day decided, miraculously, to add that app and start sending me free stuff, which I don’t want anyway. I was debating about the app Live Messenger, but since fb has its own chat window, I got rid of it. It wasn’t easy because anything that hints of interactivity excites me.

The left-over 15-20 apps which I really use, are meticulously edited in these ways:

Left Menu: Show this in my left-hand menu. (check)
News Feed: Show me stories about this in my News Feed. (sometimes check)

Sometimes I check this, sometimes I don’t. the ones I don’t are like for SuperPoke! which will flood out my news feed if I do a mass poke.

Mini-Feed: Show my friends stories about this through News Feed and my Mini-Feed.

I usually check this if the above is checked.

Profile Links: Add a link below the profile picture to any profile.

I only check this if this app required my friends to ‘do something’ to me, for e.g. send an egg to me, send a free gift to me; or for publicity sake, take a look at my travel profile, at my ebay items’

Email: Allow this application to contact me via email.

NEVER! Left only for the really important stuff like wall posts, comments on my photos.

HotMail.com one of the first servers of free mail on the Internet, therefore he and to this day remains to the most known, certainly not without help Microsoft Network - MSN.com. Support of mail boxes on Hotmail.com has been incorporated in program Outlook Express since the first versions, for the Outlook even the special report has been developed for reception of mail, in exchange POP3 developers have thought up the report which works through standard HTTP port 80, under name HTTPMail. It would seem, it should facilitate a life to Internet users who have access through a proxy, however, as quite often it turns out at a microsoftware, in Outlook Expres support NTLM of an authentication for ISA a proxy of own development has not been built in. Though certainly at special persistence it is possible to adjust mail.

Top 3 Music Discovery Sites

Posted by PASTener | 7/10/2008 02:49:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

Long gone are the days of browsing through record stores to find new music (record stores are still awesome hangouts though), making physical mixtapes for your friends (except for the nostalgic among us), and putting CDs on your Christmas list (iTunes gift cards anyone?). Digital technologies and the seemingly endless supply of online music destinations have forever changed the way we discover the tunes we like.

Born out of my own frustration with the retardedly over-crowded “music discovery” space, this post aims to sift through the plethora of sites, many of which are variations of the same concept, and pinpoint the best ones.

Do you prefer to listen to short clips of top downloads on iTunes because it’s easy? (Ya, iTunes is more of a place to buy a song/album that you know you want, but you can definitely discover new stuff by poking around, checking the free download of the week etc). Are you a fan of one of the numerous music social networking sites that let you discover people with similar musical taste, create/share playlists, or track down obscure indie bands? Or do you love Pandora’s almost-no-work-involved recommendation system?

We’re all different when it comes to our preferred methods of music discovery, but the end goal is the same, right? We want to consistently discover new music that resonates with us personally - bands we can go see live, music to download, artists we can relate to. There are so many places to do this now it makes my head spin, so I needed to simply.

With that, here are my top 3:

Pandora
I’ve been a fan of Pandora for a long time. The internet radio station, with its robust recommendation system based on the work of 50 analysts who break songs down into musical attributes, is surprisingly good at finding music that suits your tastes. And with the thumbs-up/thumbs-down rating system, the more you use it the smarter it gets. Their Facebook app is certainly convenient too.

iLike
If you can put up with 30 second clips, iLike is great for discovery. The fact that it can be plugged into Facebook, iTunes, MySpace, Bebo and others makes it a versatile social platform and is probably why they have so many registered users making profiles, sharing playlists and the like. And you can get lots of free music from new artists.

Is iphone worth to buy?

Posted by PASTener | 7/10/2008 02:49:00 AM | , | 0 comments »

In a few hours from now, Apple’s next generation iphone so-called “iphone 3G” will be available for sale in 21 countries. Though the hype has been muted when compared to a year ago, long queues are expected at the stores across the world on Friday. Is the iphone actually worth the extra money?

Exactly a year ago, with the launch of iphone, Apple has carved a niche for itself in the cell phone market. Dubbed as the “Jesus Phone” by many, the No.1 gadget according to TIME’S Magazine can be found with 6 million people today. On June 9th Steve Jobs unveiled the “iphone 3G” in San Francisco. Apple claims that the new iphone is 36 times faster than its competitors Nokia N95 and Treo in loading the WebPages.

The new iphone 3G will cost $199 for an 8 gigabyte model and $299 for a 16 GB model. Though the prices have been slashed by $200 on the gizmo, the total cost on the phone is dearer by $160 with a 2 year contract from the only carrier AT & T in the U.S. The unlimited data plan price has been increased by $10, this makes the bill to jump from $59.99 to $69.99 plus taxes for a basic 450 min talk time plan plus unlimited internet with no free text messages. For sending 200 text messages/month, one has to spend extra $5 more. Current iphone owners have to sign a new 2 year contract no matter where there current contract is and change the data plan (this replaces the current data plan), in order to get a phone at subsidized price.

So what does the new iphone offers? Is it worth, the extra bucks to buy or upgrade? It is basically a 3G phone, which brings faster webpage’s and also one can talk on the iphone and surf the internet simultaneously which wasn’t possible before on the EDGE network. However, you need to be careful and check before buying as the 3G network is not available in all parts of the U.S. (Bear in mind that the iphone is still without capability to cut copy and paste, voice dialing, video recording, Bluetooth stereo audio, MMS and memory card slot.) The physical changes are smaller but better as the iphone weighs less with a plastic back and 5hrs of 3G talk time. It comes with a standard headphone jack, so a new adapter is not required for non apple headphones. Unfortunately Apple has not made any changes to its built in 2 MP camera in the new iphone. Adequate light is necessary to avoid the grainy pictures as there is no flash. What about the GPS? The new iphone comes with a built in GPS chip too.

Weezer + YouTube = A New Era of Collaboration

Posted by PASTener | 7/10/2008 02:49:00 AM | | 0 comments »

Weezer seems to be having a love affair with YouTube lately. As I was rewatching “Pork and Beans” today, I started thinking about how the video is a testament to the fact that user-generated content has become ubiquitous. Ordinary people have become viral celebrities (or ceWEBrities, as some are calling them). So much so that real celebrities are collaborating with them.

P&B was “written by Rivers Cuomo as a reaction to a meeting with Geffen where the band was told it needed to record more-commercial material. Cuomo remarked, ‘I came out of it pretty angry. But ironically, it inspired me to write another song.’” [Wikipedia] Reminds me of Sara Bareilles and her “Love Song” inspiration that we mentioned in another post…

Other than being a catchy song with the “familiar, self-assured lameness” of Weezer’s glory days (as Marc Hogan of Pitchfork Media put it), the cast of the music video is peppered with many of the oddball YouTube celebrities that we love to hate/hate to love. For those of you who aren’t so addicted to YouTube that you recognize all the characters, here’s a helpful version of the video with clickable annotations.

Their making a video like this (whether it was just a fun idea or a clever viral marketing ploy) coupled with Cuomo’s mission to make a song together with YouTube users is, to me, indicative of a new era of collaboration that is rapidly gaining traction - one in which fans want to interact with their favorite artists in new ways, musicians are willing to be more accessible to their fans, and where ordinary people have many more opportunities to do creative things, share them, and possibly achieve more than just their 15 minutes of fame.

iPhone App: Daylite

Posted by PASTener | 7/10/2008 02:49:00 AM | | 0 comments »

First in our series of iPhone developer interviews is AJ, CEO of MarketCircle about their approach to developing Daylite for the iPhone. Transcript follows:

Getting really busy for you this week I suppose?
Always busy. We have a lot going on in addition to the iPhone announcement.

How and when did you decide Daylite for the iPhone made sense for MarketCircle to build?
It goes back to our methods in the early days really. We built Daylite for ourselves. With some encouragement from Apple we commercialized it and began selling it. The sales overtook our original line of business and the rest is history. So it was with the iPhone version of Daylite. We have a need ourselves to have this app in mobile form. Apple conveniently brought us the iPhone and very soon we’ll have another amazing extension to our product line. With each build we are more and more excited and encouraged by what we’re seeing come out of our engineering group.

Speaking of that, will Daylite for the iPhone be available “day 1″ on the App store?
No, there are business model issues and testing issues we want to perfect before getting too far ahead of ourselves. The mobile app is really a companion app to Daylite.

Have you settled on pricing yet? Or, will it be free?
We know it won’t be free. What the final pricing is will be a wait and see matter.

Sure. That makes sense. As this is a mobile companion what other mobile platforms were considered.
This is our first commercial mobile app for Daylite. Developing for iPhone made a lot of sense as XCode makes it so easy to do what we do. Blackberry and Windows Mobile… not so much. The platform decision was easy.

What else would you like to offer application wise?
Let’s get this one out first and see what unfolds. Our hands are full as it is.

On an aside… iPhoney, your iPhone emulator, remains REALLY popular. What’s the story there?
As you know the Aspen emulator is available in the iPhone SDK (free to registered developers). But, for some reason iPhoney still draws a lot of traffic despite Apple’s more feature rich emulator. It’s fun and it’s novel and we’ll keep it around. But, there’s no real rationale for the healthy stream of traffic as far as we can tell.

Any parting comments?
The iPhone architecture is proving out OSX as “the new way” and I’m certain we’ll begin seeing heightened business productivity. Besides, there are becoming less and less reasons to buy a Windows Mobile device.

Lively, Vista, iPhone, and YouTube Ads

Posted by PASTener | 7/10/2008 02:49:00 AM | , , | 0 comments »

At the beginning of class today, I relayed the story of own of my students from last semester and her quest for a job. I hope she’ll be blogging about it soon on WebPubNET, but basically she was successful in securing employment for working a personal network. She made a point to come to a guest speaker engagement, asked questions during the session, introduced herself afterward, traded contact info. Had a few followup conversations, received an invite to a lovely party, and then ultimately found herself getting called in for an interview. She is now gainfully employed by Trademark Media as a Design Technologist! Participating in a community really works. And, this isn’t a random situation or one-shot deal. I have been constantly impressed with the power of tapping my former students to place my current students.

We talked about the frenzy for the new iPhone and Apple’s processes to handle the demand come the release of the 3G version on Friday.

Google just announced its own entry in the virtual space with Lively. It’s sort of a Second Life competitor, but right now, it is different in that it is not one cohesive “world.” Here’s the YouTube video we looked at for Bobcat Village, TX State’s Second Life island.

We looked at an article on Microsoft’s Vista, the much criticized operating system. Apparently, Microsoft is going to take a harder line, not letting customers purchase new hardware with XP on it, the old, reliable OS. This looks more like a PR move, in combating criticisms from competitiors (read “Apple”). Good luck with that. Anyone I know that has used Vista thinks it is a piece of junk, a big step backward. Now that Bill Gates is gone, I think you will see more of this hard line approach to customer issues via the management style of Steve Ballmer.

Finally, we discussed YouTube’s strategy for adding pre-roll and post-roll ads to some of their videos. Most of my students felt that it was something that was bound to happen eventually, the free ride was going to be over sooner or later. As we know, Google owns YouTube. They are only going to be placing ads on a small percentage of videos that are preapproved by advertisers. That does two things, insures advertisers that their products/services won’t be associated with potentially questionable material in some YouTube videos and it limits their liability for potentially generating revenue on copyrighted material.

Google & Einstein

I’m now certain that my favourite company, Google, literally has all the answers. Yes literally all the answers! “…if this Google monster has all the answers then why submit wrong assignments, why are there so many inaccurate writingsa out there, design terrible sites/systems, why so many misconceptions on nature and generally everything?”, i can here the critics moan. I think the answer lies in the fact that only quality questions get quality answers.

Time Magazine’s man of the century Albert Einstein is famous for having said “I possess no special talents, i am passionately curious”. His “thought experiments” involved a lot of quality questions and thus quality answers like the law of relativity.

The same applies to Google you just have to give it correct questions or queries and it will give you excellent answers. Here’s a link to guide you on how you can provide Google with quality questions in order to get quality answers from the-best-company-to-work-for in my view, Google Guide. Enjoy your day.

Google, Google and Google everywhere.

Yesterday and today seem to be dominated by Google, everywhere I turned it seems there is some new Google initiative. Yesterday was Marc Chagall’s birthday so Google decided to confuse me by changing the Google logo into something that certainly didn’t read Google but was in fact a homage to Mark Chagall. Does this read like Google to you?

Chagall worked a lot in stained glass, so I shouldn’t really complain, it took me back to my stained-glass shadowed days of the Boys Brigade. Sitting in churches and marching up and down with a silly hat on and in shorts, your parents proudly looking on as their pre-pubescents trained to become cannon fodder in some future conflict. (In the case of the Boys Brigade I presume drowning fodder would be more likely).

PS I was thrown out of the BB’s for smoking, I therefore thank them for my first opportunity to rebel.

Today Google launches ” Google lively” which appears to be version of second life although with less bells and whistles apparently. I may actually try this, but as I struggle to have any life and have no virtual life presence whatsoever don’t hold your breath waiting on reports of what a fantastic or otherwise experience Google lively is. As a total nontechy I will simply give you a link so those of you with technical bent can make up your own minds about this new world.

Organize Your Mails…!

Posted by PASTener | 7/09/2008 05:06:00 PM | , | 0 comments »

With your mail account flooded with so many mails everyday, don’t you think it is time to get organized? Do you know there is a way to automatically sort all your incoming mails automatically? Seems interesting…?

Well almost all web based mail services offer this facility. Few such as yahoo.com allow you to automatically sort mail to different folders. Where as Gmail has no folders but you can create different labels and all mails that match a criteria will be marked with corresponding label.

Sorting mails automatically in Gmail:

Create a new label by clicking on the Edit Labels on the left side pan. Click on Settings on the top right corner, choose Filters. Click on Create new filer. Now you can filter the mails based on various criteria such as From Address, Subject, has Attachment etc. Click on the Next Step button, and choose the label that you just created. You can also apply some other actions on the incoming mails such as forwarding to particular email automatically or deleting it. Once you have selected necessary options, click on Create Filter button. Do not forget to select the check box next to the button Create Filter.

Sorting Mails automatically in Yahoo

Select Options>Mail Options from top right corner and Choose Filter. Click on the Add button to add a new filter. Enter a name for the filter and select the criteria. Select the appropriate folder to which the mails should be filtered. Click on Add Filter. Yahoo requires you to upgrade to Yahoo! Mil Plus if you want to create more that 15 filters.

Sorting Mails automatically in Hotmail/Windows Live

Select Sorting Mails automatically in Yahoo from the Options on the top right bar. Click on New Filter, Select the appropriate criteria and click on Save.
Out of the above three web based mail service, I felt Hotmail has the simplest way of organizing mails.

Faster shutdown in Vista

From the Windows Vista Help blog, here’s a try-at-your-own-risk trick (and backup your Registry first!):

Open Regedit (WINDOWS KEY + R on your keyboard, or by clicking Start and typing on the search bar “regedit” without quotes. Hit Enter

Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l] On the right panel look for the “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” string and change it value to 1000 by right clicking the string and selecting Modify…

Default Value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=20000

Modified value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=5000
Modified value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=1000 (extreme, use it at your own risk)

A value of 3000 was reported to work nicely “but try the 5000 first. 3000 does sometimes leave some programs lagging which then need a further key click.”

3. Get other sites to link to you

4. Create a blog and post often

5. Use Google’s free tools.

Jay Leno: The Dark Knight is best film

Posted by PASTener | 7/09/2008 04:56:00 PM | , | 0 comments »

Tonight Jay Leno said before inviting Aaron Eckhart to the stage that The Dark Knight is the best film of the year. Now technically Jay Leno is not a professional film critic, but realize that he watches just as many films as the critics do, largely for the purpose of researching guest roles. He has also been a guest critic with Richard Roeper in place of Roger Ebert. This guy knows his films, and if he says The Dark Knight is the best film of the year so far, I’m inclined to believe his judgment. Combine that with the incredible early reviews, and it looks like another Nolan masterpiece. The Dark Knight hits theaters July 18th!

Sex In Space

Sex in space: The final frontier.

Space.com takes a look at the subject of sexual intercourse in space — how likely it is to happen among crew members isolated in the atmosphere for months at a time, how they would do it, and the inadvisability of getting pregnant in zero gravity.

Firstly: can we reasonably expect a crew to not have sex with each other after being stuck on a three-year mission to one of Jupiter’s moons? Should those crews all be of the same gender? And if they are all of the same gender — can we reasonably expect them not to have sex with each other after being stuck on a three-year mission to one of Jupiter’s moons?

Secondly: the standard missionary position would not seem to be ideal for the zero gravity shag. A whole new kama sutra might have to be invented for intergalactic sex. Complete with “torso straps” to keep those bodies together. (However, those adventurous “sex swing” types who like being suspended from trapezes and chandeliers might benefit).

And finally: pregnancy is a no-no in zero grav. Unless you can get the fetuses to wear little moon boots. So will women have to be temporarily sterilized before being cleared for space travel? Or will our astronauts work on simply an honor system? And can they? See, we are back to the first point.
